Comments Off on Nintendo in hot water with Philips

Nintendo’s bad times just got worse as a U.K. court ruling declared that the Japanese multinational consumer electronics company is found guilty of infringing two remote control patents for recognizing hand gestures and motion that are already owned by Philips electronics. Reportedly, requesting a jury trail to seek damages, Philips has now asked the court to impose a ban on import/export and sales of both Nintendo Wii and Wii U consoles in the United States of America. Back in 2012, Philips, a Dutch diversified technology company, filed a case against Nintendo, which is one of the top video game consoles manufacturers, claiming that it already owns a patent on technology used to recognize hand gestures and motions, and that the Japanese firm is infringing its three remote control patents with its two video game consoles i.e the Wii U and the Wii. One patent was found invalid by the England […]

Comments Off on The Legend of Zelda Wii U. Could it not be Link?

The new The Legend of Zelda for the Wii U looked great, didn’t it? But what as up with Link? He wasn’t wearing his iconic green tunic or hat. Why did Link look so weird? “No one explicitly said that that was Link.” That’s what Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma told me when I asked him about Link’s — or whomever it is — new appearance during an interview at Nintendo’s E3 booth. He said this with a smile and a laugh. Could the bow-wielding hero we just saw not be Link? Earlier in the interview, Aonuma told me that he was always looking for ways to shake up Zelda’s conventions. We saw this in the recent A Link Between Worlds for the 3DS, which let you explore dungeons in any order you wanted while renting items from a store. But a Zelda game without Link as the main hero? That would be […]

Comments Off on Ubisoft studio head is fed up with video games that “treat gamers like idiots.”

Ubisoft Toronto studio head Jade Raymond is fed up with video games that “treat gamers like idiots.” In a new interview with The Grid, Raymond said games can be so much more than popular tropes.  “I don’t like the assumption that all people who play games want big chainsaws and women in bikinis. It’s like, really? Not all gamers are teenage boys, and even teenage boys want more than that,” Raymond said. The interviewer said that protagonists of many popular video games often are “husky voiced, emotionless asshole[s],” and Raymond seemed to agree. “It’s got to change, right?” she said, pointing out that even traditional action movies have evolved to a point where their main characters are more narratively complex. “The video game world is improving, too: We’re seeing some variety,” Raymond said. “Grand Theft Auto has been doing a good job picking interesting main characters in recent years–like the new-immigrant […]
